Simple Stay at Home Date Night Ideas

May 1, 2020

By now some people are tired of being at home and are aching to go back to living their best life. That's understandable, but for now, remember that it is in our best interest so please stay home. Advisory aside, being on lockdown with a partner can either be detrimental or beneficial to the relationship. It's up to both parties to determine how it is affected. One way to ensure that the effects are beneficial is to make sure that your daily routines are not drastically changed while at home i.e. date nights are not cancelled. In fact, if you had date night once per week, you now have extra time to do so more than once. Before you say "But Kimberley we're supposed to stay home". You’d be surprised how much date night activities can be done at home. Here are some simple stay at home date night ideas.

Cook Together

In a previous post, I mentioned upgrading cooking skills as one activity we can do at this time. I've also seen some posts on social media where people complain that they're tired of cooking. I know that cooking is an arduous task especially when it is done more often than usual. Since we're spending more time at home we are cooking more frequently. Cooking with your partner is one way to spice things up and make it seem like less of a chore. Whether you are a whiz in the kitchen or a newbie the internet has you covered with tasty recipes you can try using the ingredients you have on hand. You can choose to make something new or one of your favourite meals. Cooking together is guaranteed to generate a few laughs and funny stories to share in the future.

Have Dinner by Candlelight

Speaking of cooking, if you miss the fancy dining experience at a restaurant you can create your own. Prepare a meal from scratch or order take out from your favourite restaurant and then set the mood. Set the table, dim your lights or use actual candles if you have them, get dressed and enjoy your DIY candlelit dinner. This gives you a reason to dress up even if you are not going further than your dining room. As far as stay at home date night ideas go candlelit dinners are a must-do. Think of this as a way to jazz up your everyday meals at home. The best part is you get to have a romantic evening without leaving the confines of your house.

Watch Movies

Seeing a movie will forever be a classic date night activity. The bright side of having a movie date at home is you can see as many films as you choose in one sitting. You can decide on a theme and stick to movies within the theme or just wing it and watch old favourites. I highly recommend rom-coms since they are romantic but not too mushy for a man to enjoy. You can go all out to get the ultimate theatre experience. This may be done by building a fort with pillows and blankets and gathering enough savoury and sweet snacks, popcorn included. Finally, you get cosy and enjoy the movie or movies of your choice.

Play Games

Bring out those old board games and embrace your competitive side. I always say a little competition never hurt anyone, that is, until I start losing at dominos. Fortunately, dominos isn't a two-person game, so you do not have to share my experience. I love playing games and I know I'm not alone in saying that. There are so many games to choose from, whether you're into board games, role-playing games or video games there is something for you and your partner to enjoy. You can compete in video games. I always prefer combat games to car racing for the mere fact that I have a 'fighting' chance at winning. Let's just say if I'm to drive anything like the way I drive in video games I would need a road to myself with no turns. 😂

Solve a Puzzle

Putting together a puzzle is a great way to bond with your partner. Some of the best conversations can be had while doing a puzzle. I know a lot of people may not enjoy puzzles but there is something relaxing about working on and completing a puzzle. As a couple, it gives you a goal, albeit short-term, to work towards. There is also a sense of accomplishment when you complete it. I definitely enjoy puzzles. The last one I did took a few days to complete. Giant puzzles are the best. I prefer the ones with bigger pieces as it can be frustrating to realize that there are pieces missing when you are close to completion and this can happen easily with smaller pieces.

Have a Spa Night

Homemade or store-bought face masks, bath bombs, massage oils, lotions, scented candles, these are the perfect tools for your DIY spa night. We all love to be pampered and this is a great way to relax and enjoy some much needed TLC with your partner. You can take turns giving each other massages, foot rubs or whatever else it is that makes you relax. A quick tutorial on massages can turn you into a pro in no time. Ladies pay no attention to the naysayers i.e. men, who will reject the idea initially and then secretly enjoy it. If massages aren't your thing a long soak in the bath should also do the trick. You do not need to leave home to enjoy the spa experience. This date night idea allows you to rejuvenate and make memories with your partner without breaking the bank.

Indulge in Desserts

You know how occasionally people go wine tasting? Do that but with desserts. Get a bunch of desserts like an assortment of chocolates, cheesecakes or ice cream flavours and indulge. Take turns to sample each dessert and then talk about the ones you enjoyed. This gives you a chance to satisfy your sweet tooth. Shake things up a bit by challenging each other to guess flavours through a blind taste test. If you are on a diet this date idea is a romantic and guilt-free way to cheat. Since we are talking about desserts a bottle of wine would be the perfect pairing. So, pour a glass or two and just enjoy this time together.

Read a Book Together

Reading is certainly not a typical date idea however, it can be an amazing experience if done right. It is also the perfect date for book lovers. You may read separate books and then talk about what you've read or choose a book you both enjoy and take turns reading to each other. Add to the fun by changing your tone or accent for different characters. Reading is already an adventure, and this allows you to share the journey with your partner. This activity gives you date ideas for several days since you may not complete the book in one night.

Indoor Paint and Sip

I got this idea from an Instagram story and just thought it was really cool. Painting while sipping wine is super fun even if you are not an art lover. It is even more exciting when doing it in the comfort of your home with your partner. All you need are some art supplies, a steady hand and YouTube. Painting can be a relaxing activity. An indoor paint and sip date allows you to relax at home with your person while exploring your creative side. This can easily fall into the simple category because it does not require a lot.

Talk about stuff and things

I know you might be thinking, "talking isn't a date, we do that every day". But do you really communicate? It's a common mistake for us to think that we communicate with someone regularly simply because we see them every day. However, we don't necessarily always have meaningful conversations. In my opinion "Hun, please take out the trash", isn't meaningful communication. While talking may not be an ideal date night idea, late-night conversations over coffee or wine can be awesome. Taking time to communicate with your partner can yield amazing results. You can talk about your future goals, share stories or plan a trip together for when this is over. You can even use the time to create a bucket list of things you want to achieve together. The possibilities are endless when it comes to communicating and finding things to talk about.

Conclusion

We all love a good date night. Being at home doesn't mean you can't enjoy going on a date. Some of the most romantic or amazing dates you will have will be some of the simplest. I may have given you a few ideas but your stay-at-home date night experience is only limited by your imagination. Most activities can easily be modified so they can be done at home. We don't know how long this situation will last so we may as well make it work.

I love doing date nights at home. My husband and I enjoy playing scrabble with a cocktail or a craft beer to feel like we are out and about, but really are just comfortable at home. I love the paint and sip idea though, we will need to try that!

Love these ideas! And you’re so right, date nights at home can be just as good as date nights out! My husband and I have had one every week. We order take out from our favorite restaurant to help keep them in business. And then just talk and listen to music. I love the idea of playing board games, so maybe we’ll give that a try this weekend. Thank you for sharing!
