I was hesitant about making this post as I try to keep my blog posts lighthearted and positive. But after this experience, I had to write about it. Travelling is supposed to be an enjoyable and enriching experience, but sometimes it can become a nightmare. This is exactly what happened to my partner and me during what should have been a straightforward journey with Arajet Airline. What followed was a series of unfortunate events, poor communication, and complete disregard for customer care.
The Start of Our Journey
We booked a roundtrip flight to Punta Cana with Arajet Airline. The departure trip was fine despite a lengthy delay with no explanation. This, I am now realising was the precursor to the poor communication from the airline. We arrived at Punta Cana Airport well-prepared for our flight back to Jamaica on the morning in question. We checked in online more than 24 hours prior. We had booked the "Comfort" option which allowed us to check one item each as well as bring a personal item onboard. After joining a long queue to check our luggage, we proceeded to the gate feeling optimistic about our upcoming flight.
The Confusion at the Gate
Things took a turn for the worse when we reached the boarding gate. The agents took our passports and boarding passes, and from that point, chaos ensued. Although the agents spoke Spanish, it was evident from their body language and demeanour that something was wrong. They were counting and recounting boarding passes in a state of panic. It was clear to us that they may have overbooked the flight and didn't know how to explain this to us. When we inquired about the issue, we were met with silence. They refused to provide any explanation.
The situation became even more suspicious when a white family rushed to the gate and were allowed to board immediately, even though we had been waiting long before their arrival. We watched in disbelief as the plane left the tarmac without us. When someone finally addressed us, they claimed we had arrived late an impossibility since we literally watched them board passengers who arrived after we did.
The Aftermath
The excuses shifted from us being late to a "system error." Adding insult to injury, our checked luggage was already on the flight to Jamaica, which they initially denied. A so-called supervisor assured us that we would be rebooked for a flight home that same day. However, this turned out to be false. Instead, they escorted us to the baggage claim area which was likely a tactic to get us away from the gate and out of their hair.
Stranded Without Assistance
After some frantic online research, we realised there were no more flights to Kingston from Punta Cana that day. We spent the entire day at the airport, seeking answers and assistance from Arajet Airline, only to be met with stonewalling and evasive responses. Ultimately, we had no choice but to make our way to Santo Domingo, a two-hour drive, to catch a flight the following day.
The costs quickly added up. We paid out of pocket for additional flights, transportation, and basic sustenance while stranded. Since our luggage had already arrived in Jamaica, we couldn’t even access essential items during our unexpected overnight stay at Santo Domingo Airport. Paying for a hotel seemed unnecessary given the mounting costs we had already incurred.
The Lack of Accountability
This experience highlighted a significant issue with Arajet Airline. The airline did not offer a proper explanation for why we were denied boarding or provide a solution to our predicament. Instead, we were left to fend for ourselves. When we arrived in Jamaica the next day, it was another issue to obtain our luggage which arrived the day before. There were no Arajet personnel at the airport to assist us with getting our luggage. We had to speak to a customs supervisor who managed to have someone assist us.
Final Thoughts
Travelling should never leave you stranded and helpless, yet that’s exactly what Arajet Airline did to us. From their lack of transparency to their inadequate customer service, this experience has left us questioning whether saving a few dollars is worth such a hassle. For us, the answer is a resounding no. If you’re considering flying with Arajet Airline, let this story serve as a cautionary tale. While their low fares may be tempting, the financial and emotional hidden costs can far outweigh any initial savings. If you choose to fly with them, be prepared for the possibility of unexpected challenges and minimal support. Sometimes, what seems like a great deal can cost you far more than you bargained for.

I’m so sorry this happened to you! That is tough. My biggest travel mishap so far happened in 2022 when the air traffic controllers went on strike, causing me to miss a day of prebooked excursions and to make some last minute expensive connecting flight changes – my partner and I lost/spent about US$200 each. We also had to find a place to stay overnight in Montego Bay as driving back to Kingston, then again to Mobay for our new flight the next day sounded tiring. Plus, the extra toll would match what we spent on the hotel room anyway. I was devastated but took consolation in the fact that I could understand the reason for the strike. My own union has had to strike twice in the past 5 years to get fair compensation.
I hope your vacation went smoothly otherwise. All these airlines have their moments.
Thanks Elle, the vacation itself was amazing. I’ll be sharing the details on here as well but man that whole experience was nerve wracking.
I can only imagine how that went for you. I definitely understand when strikes takes place regarding compensation. I sometimes wish my union would do that even once but that’s another story. Thanks so much for reading!
