10 Things To Do On A Rainy Day

May 24, 2019

ainy days are no fun when you have to be out in it. Whether it’s your shoes getting soaked, the possibility of being splashed by a passing vehicle or the traffic you have to face, if we’re being honest we all hate those rainy days when we aren’t at home. Now I know that some people might enjoy that but for the rest of us, there is nothing better than being at home on a rainy day, whether alone or with company. Please note that I am talking about those days where it’s just the rain and not a thunderstorm because if I am ever home alone during a thunderstorm you will find me huddled up in a corner with my eyes closed and my hands covering my ears. Anyway, while we enjoy the ideas of being at home on a rainy day it can be boring if you don’t know how to make the best of it. It has been raining a lot recently. Here are 10 things you can do on a rainy day.

10 Things to do on rainy day

  1. Get your Bake on
  2. Pamper Yourself
  3. Do some reading
  4. Learn a Language
  5. Have a Movie Marathon
  6. Binge Watch TV Shows
  7. Play Games
  8. Catch Some Zzzs
  9. Organize or Clean Something
  10. Practise or Start a new hobby

1. Get your Bake on

What better way to brighten a gloomy day than to hop into your kitchen and turning up the heat. By that, I mean turning on your stove. Whether you go for something savoury like a pizza or something sweet like cookies, cupcakes or brownies (my favourites) you must admit that baking is a great way to pass time on a rainy day. Not only does it make your house warmer but the smell of freshly baked pastries is so heavenly it can also warm your heart.

2. Pamper Yourself

We are often so busy with the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we often forget to take care of ourselves. A rainy day is a perfect day to break out those bath bombs you’ve wanted to use. You may also choose to pour yourself some wine and just relax in a bath filled with bubbles. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure, you may choose bright colours to add a pop of colour to a gloomy day or choose dark colours to match your dreary mood. The best part is it’s a chill day so you can sit for as long as you want so that your freshly painted nails don’t get smudged. For some, pampering your self means taking some time to reflect and meditate. Whether you choose to read your Bible or take a more physical approach with yoga both activities are perfect for you on a rainy day.

3. Do some reading

You know that book you’ve been dying to read? Read it now. That book you started months ago but was too busy to finish, do just that! Rainy days are great for curling up in your favourite chair with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee for the coffee lovers and a good book. It doesn’t matter what you read, what matters is that it is interesting to you. Books have the power to transport you to a whole new world. You can be so engrossed in a book that you don’t notice how quickly the time passes. As a bonus there are several benefits of reading such as expanding your vocabulary, increasing your memory and improving your writing skills. So reading not only helps you relax but it also aids with self-development.

4. Learn a language

If you’re like me you have a love and appreciation for different languages. In Jamaica, we speak Jamaican Creole also called Patois as well as Jamaican Standard English. I admit that studying Linguistics at University piqued my interest in learning new languages. However, I do believe that if you wish to travel outside of your country it is good to learn at least the basics of another language. Learning a language is an ideal way to challenge yourself on a rainy day. I think ‘Duolingo’ is a really good app to help you learn a language.

5. Have a Movie Marathon

Whether you love horror movies or prefer romantic comedies you will have a wide variety of movies to choose from. A movie marathon is one of the best things you can do on a rainy day. There is just something about getting comfy in a couch or on your bed with popcorn and a bunch of movies to watch. The dreary weather outside can also heighten the experience depending on your movie choices.

6. Binge watch a TV show

The best part of binge-watching a show is the fact that you get to watch episode after episode without having to worry about it ending with a cliff hanger and you having to wait a week to see what happens next. You can choose to start a new show or get up to date on the one you already started. So what are you waiting for? Grab some snacks and start streaming. By the way, ‘Riverdale’ is an awesome series and it’s three seasons in *hint hint*.

7. Play Games

A rainy day is a good time to dust off those old board games you haven’t played in a while, invite some friends over and get your competitive juices flowing. The possibilities are endless where games are concerned. If board games aren’t your thing you can pull out the game consoles. Maybe video games don’t tickle your fancy, in that case you can go for the more active games such as Charades, Taboo or Pictionary. If you are still looking for something more laid back but still challenging you can do some puzzles. Regardless of your preference, there is no doubt that playing games is a good rainy day activity.

8. Catch Some Zzzs

You work hard every other day so why not use the opportunity to catch up on that much-needed sleep. There is nothing better than sleeping while it’s raining. The pitter-patter of the raindrops on the roof creates the perfect lullaby. Some persons might find it hard to fall asleep during the day so if that’s the case you can sleep in. You will be amazed at how well-rested and refreshed you will feel with the additional hours of sleep. In my opinion, rainy days can be lazy days so you shouldn’t feel guilty if you make the best of the day by sleeping.

9. Organize or Clean Something

I know some people might not agree that cleaning is an ideal activity for a rainy day. They might think that rainy day activities, like the weather, should be pretty chill. Less work, more relaxing. I do believe, however, that it is ideal to also be productive. Organizing or cleaning does not have to be an arduous task. If you decide to clean out your closet you can spice it up by breaking out your favourite drink and have a mini fashion show ‘Sex and the City’ style. The best part is you can donate the things you no longer need to charity. If you prefer something simpler you can organize your drawer by simply folding clothes or you can clean your refrigerator by removing the old food.

10. Practise or start a new hobby

So you’ve cleaned, you’ve read and you’ve watched some movies now what? You’ve exhausted your list of things to do on a rainy day and now you are not certain what you should do next. Why not start a new hobby. Maybe you always wanted to learn how to paint or you wanted to improve your hair braiding skills. In instances like these YouTube is your go-to source. You can watch tutorials on hairstyles, make-up and even drawing.  You can use the time to not only learn something new but to also brush up on what you may already know.

Conclusion

Rainy days at home do not have to be like the weather outside. You can make the most of your day by doing things you enjoy. While you do not have to do all 10 things mentioned in one day it’s always good to have options.

I love rainy days!! In fact, my name is Summer Rayne, so I’ve always felt an affinity for the rain, lol. My favorite thing to do, if it’s warm enough, is to head outside and splash in the puddles and play in the rain as I did as a child. All three of our children (2 grown and one teen) have done this with me and I hope it’s something they continue as well with their kids. Thanks for a great post!

    • Reply Kimberley October 14, 2019 at 8:45 pm

Oh wow you have an amazing name. Funny enough I initially wanted to use ‘Summer Raine’ as my IG handle. It is an amazing experience to spend time with your family and make fun memories which eventually become family traditions. Thank you so much for reading!
