Summer is officially here and it certainly brought the heat! This is the season for slowing down and indulging in relaxation and I believe that diving head-first into a captivating book is a great way to unwind this summer. Whether you want to read while spending a day at the beach or just curling up in your favourite spot with a book in hand, reading is always a great way to relax. As a book lover, I am happy to share my top seven recommendations to add to your summer reading list. These captivating stories will evoke various emotions, leaving an indelible mark on your heart and mind. So prepare to immerse yourselves and discover new authors that will make your summer reading experience unforgettable.

1. Yinka Where is your Huzband by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn

The story follows Yinka a thirty-something British-Nigerian woman who much to the dismay of her mother is yet to find a husband. She is Oxford-educated and has a high-paying job but the immense pressure from her family to find a husband leads her to develop a crazy plan to find a date in time for her cousin's wedding. Yinka struggles with insecurities and you'll get to follow her journey to self-love. It is worth noting that this is not quite a romance story, but a story of a woman losing herself and finding herself. "Yinka, Where is Your Huzband?" features heartwarming, sentimental, and humorous moments. If you're in the mood for an entertaining and easygoing read, this is definitely one for the books 😁...okay I'll usher myself out.

2. Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto

This hilarious and heartwarming novel takes readers on an unforgettable adventure. The story revolves around Meddelin “Meddy” Chan, a wedding photographer who finds herself caught up in a web of mishaps and mayhem after accidentally killing her blind date. In a panic, she calls on her mother and meddlesome aunties, who arrive to help her dispose of the body. As the family embarks on a wild journey to hide the evidence, they encounter a series of unexpected twists and turns that test their bonds and sense of humour. This novel is filled with several laugh-out-loud moments. It's the perfect combination of romance, comedy and mystery. "Dial A for Aunties" is perfect for a day at the beach.

3. Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala

Imagine being suspected of killing your ex. "Arsenic and Adobo" is the first in a series by Mia P. Manansala. It falls in the category of cosy mysteries which seemed to gain popularity recently. Lila Macapagal our protagonist returns home to recover from a failed relationship, only to find herself embroiled in a murder investigation at her family's restaurant. She decides to do some sleuthing herself to clear her name. My favourite thing about this novel is the culinary journey the story takes you on. Mention is made of several mouthwatering Filipino dishes throughout the novel. The skilful blend of suspense and humour and the recipes shared at the novel's end make "Arsenic and Adobo" a must-read for mystery enthusiasts and food lovers alike.

4. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

You've probably seen the movie but have you read the book? "Crazy Rich Asians" follows the story of Rachel Chu, an intelligent and down-to-earth Chinese-American professor, as she accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Little does she know that Nick's family is one of the wealthiest and most influential in the country. This entertaining book offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of Singapore's incredibly wealthy upper class. The book delves into the themes of love, personal identity, and the conflict between traditional values and contemporary ideals, all within the extravagant realm of wealth and larger-than-life characters. After watching the movie, which is officially one of my favourites, I had to get my hands on the book.

5. The Summer of Chasing Dreams by Holly Martin

"The Summer of Chasing Dreams" follows Eva, a London-based cover designer, as she embarks on a transformative journey. This adventure begins after she discovers her late mother's list of unfulfilled dreams. Determined to honour her mother's memory, Eva sets off on an adventure around the world, accompanied by a guide named Thor Anderson. Despite their initially rocky interactions, Eva realizes that their companionship could evolve into something more than just a romance. The novel vividly portrays the various locations they visit, immersing readers in the beauty of each place. It emphasizes the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing love and adventure. With its travel-centric theme, "The Summer of Chasing Dreams" is perfect for any summer reading list, offering a delightful blend of wanderlust and excitement.

6. Wahala by Nikki May

In "Wahala," we are introduced to a trio of friends whose lives take an unexpected turn when Isobel makes her entrance. "Wahala" means trouble and Isobel was just that. Determined to transform the three friends' lives in unimaginable ways, she disrupts the status quo and sets them on a path of self-discovery and transformation they never anticipated. If you're looking for drama, you will find it in this intriguing novel. The novel takes you on an emotional roller coaster. So many things could have been avoided if only Ronke, Boo and Simi would just communicate. The plot twists at the end will leave you wanting more.

7. Sorry Not Sorry by Sophie Ranald

In this novel, we read the story of Charlotte, a likeable protagonist who finds herself navigating the complexities of love, friendship, and personal growth. "Sorry Not Sorry" is an enjoyable and uplifting read that will leave you feeling both entertained and inspired. This novel is similar to the first book in the list "Yinka, Where is your Huzband" as both protagonists have great careers and decide to step out of their comfort zones and take some risks in order to find love. If you enjoy romantic comedies this book will be a nice addition to your summer reading list.

Conclusion

With these seven captivating books, your summer reading adventures are sure to be filled with excitement, laughter, and moments of deep reflection. So go ahead, escape reality for a while, and let these fantastic stories take you on unforgettable literary journeys. Happy reading, and here's to a summer filled with laughter, sunshine, and the magic of books!
