Sushi Sensations: A Review of Sora Japanese Cuisine

Sora Japanese Cuisine

Having officially tried sushi for the first time last year, I can safely say, 'I'm hooked!' This tasty dish from Japanese cuisine has quickly rolled its way onto my list of favourite foods. This is rather shocking given how selective I am with food. Dare I say picky? Nevertheless, my love for sushi fueled my excitement when I discovered that date night would involve sushi at Sora Japanese Cuisine. I have heard many good things about this sushi restaurant and am happy to announce that it did not disappoint.

Sora Japanese Cuisine

Sora Japanese Cuisine in Kingston, Jamaica, offers a distinctive and inviting ambience that merges modern elegance with a relaxed, scenic atmosphere. Located at 26 Barbican Road in the Progressive Shopping Centre, the restaurant features both indoor and outdoor dining options, including a stunning rooftop terrace. The interior has a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, enhanced by warm lighting and tasteful Japanese decor, creating a serene and refined dining environment. Guests can enjoy a cosy, intimate setting perfect for savouring the restaurant's diverse menu.

The rooftop terrace adds a unique charm, offering breathtaking city skyline views and the Blue Mountain foothills. This open-air space is ideal for enjoying a meal under the stars, complemented by the gentle breeze and softly lit lamps. The terrace also features a chic bar, making it a popular spot for dining and socializing. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated. We decided to dine on the terrace and enjoy the cool night air.

The Menu

Before trying a new restaurant I like to view the menu online beforehand. We did this and made a note of what we wanted to try. We also decided to get a recommendation from our server. The menu at Sora Cuisine includes raw and cooked sushi options, along with other Japanese dishes like salmon, teriyaki, and seasonal lobster. If you are a newbie in the realm of sushi, cooked rolls are great to start with. A brief description of what each dish entails is provided on the menu, this way you have an idea of what you're getting before placing the order. Sora Japanese Cuisine has an extensive drink menu. I didn't see it online but we were able to look through it at the restaurant.

What We Ate

When our server arrived we were ready to order. The food came out in no time. For starters, we ordered Miso soup for my date and Cream of Pumpkin soup for me. The pumpkin soup was thick and creamy but I ended up swapping for the Miso soup instead. It was my first time trying it, it's a lot different from what I'm used to but I finished it. Next on our table were the Shrimp Tempura and Sashimi Combo. Shrimp Tempura is battered fried shrimp and has become a staple for me whenever I go to a Sushi restaurant. The Sashimi combo, however, was different. Sora's Sashimi combo consists of three pieces of tuna and three pieces of salmon sashimi. When Jamaicans think of sushi, sashimi is exactly what we imagine, raw fish. I was hesitant to try it at first, but when I did, I had no regrets.

After a brief struggle, trying to remember how to use the chopsticks, I finally managed to dip a piece of tuna sashimi into the soy sauce. As I took my first bite the delicate slice melted in my mouth, releasing a burst of rich, savoury flavours which were perfectly balanced with a subtle hint of the ocean. With that first bite, I happily dove into my meal. I couldn't wait for the other dishes to arrive. Among the other dishes we tried were the Red Dragon roll, Samurai roll and then we ordered the Fyah Turner roll to take home. All the dishes we were served looked amazing and tasted even better. We ordered a couple of martinis to go with the rolls and later tried the spicy margarita which was recommended by our server.

Final Thoughts

We are definitely sushi people. My experience at Sora Japanese Cuisine solidifies this belief as it was nothing short of exceptional. The food, the service, the scintillating conversation and the overall atmosphere made for an enjoyable evening. Sora Cuisine has truly mastered the art of combining culinary excellence with a welcoming atmosphere, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic and memorable sushi dining experience in Kingston. Whether you are a sushi aficionado or a curious first-timer, Sora Japanese Cuisine promises to leave you thoroughly satisfied and eager for your next visit. I know I am.

Thank you for sharing this dining experience with us. Jamaica has been embracing other international cuisines. It’s a good thing to expose Jamaicans to other food cultures. I don’t believe I had Japanese food. I am.not a fan of sushi, but I love Thai, and Korean dishes.
